As a fitter, Ilg joined the SMUV at the early age of 21 and became Central Secretary in 1909. As SMUV President he was fully committed to the Peace Agreement. Ilg was also a member of the Grand Council of Bern and of the National Council. |

Johann Heil fought, above all, for proportional representation on the Employee Committeees. As a Christian-orientated trade union the CMV had to make its voice heard by both the politicians and the entrepreneurs. As Ilg’s opposite number, Johann Heil committed himself to the Peace Agreement. |
